Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act was created to ensure that the public entities like The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) operate on an open and transparent level.  It allows the media, commercial business, or individuals to request documents and records.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office encourages you to use the above supplied request form, however, it is not required.  We may request an additional five (5) business days to respond to your FOIA Request for any of the reasons listed in the FOIA.  You will be notified in writing by first-class mail of the extension and the reason for it.  The response to any such FOIA Request will be in writing and signed by the FOIA Officer.  The response will be mailed to the Requestor by first class mail, within five (5) business days after this Office’s receipt of the FOIA Request, unless said deadline to respond is extended and authorized by the FOIA.

(5 ILCS 140/6) Authority to Charge Fees

Paper FOIA Copy Fee

There is no fee to inspect any “Public Records” as the term is defined in the FOIA.  If the request is for a substantial amount of copying ( in excess of 50 pages), we will charge the actual cost as allowed by the FOIA which we have computed to be Fifteen Cents ($0.15) per page for legal or letter size black and white copies.  Fees for copies must be paid prior to receiving them.

FOIA-Exempt Requests

All requests to inspect and/or copy any documents declared as Exempt under the FOIA will be denied.  The general reason(s) for the denial and the applicable statutory section authorizing such denial will be specifically stated in our letter of denial to the requests.  (5 ILCS 140/1-7)

FOIA Request Pickup

Once a FOIA Request if fulfilled it can be mailed, emailed, or picked up at the Williamson County Sheriffs Office Lobby.  These request will only be available during normal business hours.
